VTOL & Powered Lift

Hybrid aircraft that take off vertically and cruise on a wing — and the transition between the two.

Course Overview

A VTOL takes off like a multirotor and cruises like an aeroplane, which gives you the endurance and range that rotary platforms cannot reach. It also gives you a transition — and the transition is where these aircraft are lost.

This endorsement covers hybrid and powered-lift platforms properly: what the aircraft is doing through the transition, how to plan a corridor or area survey that actually uses the endurance, and what your options are when a transition fails.

For long linear assets and large survey areas — powerlines, roads, river corridors, plantations — this is the category that makes the job economic.

PrerequisitesRemote pilot licence. Multirotor currency expected; fixed-wing experience helps but is not required.
FormatType-specific. Theory plus practical, including transition handling.

What the course covers

  • Powered-lift and VTOL configurations and how each transitions
  • Aerodynamics of the transition and the flight envelope either side
  • Mission planning for endurance — corridor and area survey patterns
  • Launch and recovery site requirements
  • Wind limits, crosswind on transition and terrain effects
  • Failure of transition and the decision to abort
  • Energy management and reserve planning over distance
  • Type-specific handling and practical assessment

Who it's for

  • Survey and mapping operators covering large areas or long corridors
  • Operators moving beyond multirotor endurance limits
  • Teams adopting a fixed-wing or hybrid platform
