Thermal & Sensor Operations

Flying the payload, not just the aircraft — thermal, multispectral and the data behind the picture.

Course Overview

A thermal camera will produce a pretty orange picture almost regardless of how you fly. Producing a picture that supports a defensible conclusion is a different skill, and it is mostly not about the flying.

This course covers what the sensor is actually measuring, why emissivity and reflected temperature matter, when conditions make the data worthless, and how to fly a survey that produces comparable results from one visit to the next.

The same discipline applies to multispectral work: indices are only meaningful if the capture is consistent.

PrerequisitesRemote pilot licence and current flying.
FormatTheory plus practical capture, including a real inspection exercise.
LocationsKathmandu, Nepal · Brisbane, Australia · or at your site

What the course covers

  • How thermal sensors work and what radiometric data really is
  • Emissivity, reflected apparent temperature and material behaviour
  • Conditions that invalidate a thermal survey — sun loading, wind, cloud
  • Solar array inspection and defect signatures
  • Substation, switchgear and building envelope inspection
  • Multispectral capture and vegetation indices
  • Calibration targets and repeatable capture
  • Flight planning for consistent ground sample and overlap
  • Interpreting and reporting results honestly

Who it's for

  • Inspection operators adding thermal capability
  • Solar, utility and building services specialists
  • Agricultural operators moving from imagery to data
